Why Is My Internet Site So Boring?

Once again a new assumption is being made. I will compare the need to use as many senses as possible in creating your site in order to entice your clients to become your leads or potential clients.

Taking, as an example, one commercial on television, I have used a bread commercial. Follow my logic.

We have five senses:

hearing: auditory visual: sight taste: taste olfaction: smell feel: kinetic and psychological touch

The more senses used at each stage of the buying process, the easier it will be for the consumer to buy the product. In the bread commercial, the goal is to get the consumer to the store. Three senses are used:

seeing the commercial. (visual) hearing the happy family and the sound of the children laughing (auditory) feeling the psychological warmth of being in a positive situation whether it be the family or whether it be summer. There could also be a kinetic warmth by association as they showed the family at the summer house. The bread was thick and soft. (psychological touch)

Three of the five senses were used to get the consumer to the store. At this point at the store, the consumer acquires the additional sense added by the manufacturer.

seeing the package (visual) feeling the package of bread (kinetic touch) hearing the sound of the package as it is pressed in an out to prove the bread is soft. (auditory) the smell of the bread or the strong desire to taste the bread (olfaction)

The consumer has bought the bread and now gone home. He now can use all five of his senses to judge for himself. Has the marketing been done properly? It was highly effective and manipulative to gain an end result.

What if we were to use the same model in our marketing sites and marketing products on the internet. After doing this analysis, I personally realize my site is boring. Currently, I use very little of the 5 senses other than a few photos and some color. I considered this deeply lacking. 90% of our brain is visual. Most of my site depend on reading.

By adding a free gift such as a pdf, you give your potential lead the kinetic feeling of a printed document. Using video would add an important auditory element as it adds value combining the three senses together: hearing, sight, and psychological touch.

From going to a site which basically has none of the five senses, you have a site which is as vibrant as it can be, in a virtual environment. The next step would be to create a sense of taste and smell through photos and videos illustrating food and flowers.
